RV Repairs You Might Need When The AC Stops Working

Since you spend a lot of time on the road with your RV, you probably keep it in good repair by servicing the motor and tires regularly. Preventative maintenance keeps your RV from breaking down on the road. The air conditioner is an important part of your RV too, and while an AC isn't essential to keeping your RV operational, you can be quite miserable when your air conditioner doesn't work. Here are some RV AC problems and how they're repaired.

Dirt Buildup Causes Overheating Or Ice Formation

The AC in your RV usually has two parts. One part contains the condenser coils, and it is on top of the roof. The other part is inside and houses the blower. When the AC acts up, either of these units could be to blame. If the coils get coated with dust, dirt, or debris, different problems can develop. If the blower part gets dirty, the motor may overheat trying to spin the fan. This can cause your AC to stop working.

If the coils are dirty, this leads to ice formation. When ice gets thick enough, the AC stops working and ice will melt, drip, and potentially cause water damage. An RV repair service may need to take the AC apart and clean the components so they're not restricted by dust and dirt. The AC filter may also need to be cleaned or changed. A dirty AC can cause your unit to stop working completely or cause it to blow warm air. Cleaning might be the only repairs the AC needs to start chilling your RV again.

Electrical Malfunctions Cause Your AC To Turn Off

While you might be able to investigate and repair some AC problems on your own, electrical problems will probably need the help of an RV repair services professional who has the meters and equipment needed to test the electrical connections. It isn't always possible to spot an electrical problem just by looking. Instead, the wires and connections need to be tested with a meter.

This might require climbing up on the roof and taking the cover off of the AC to check the wires, testing the thermostat, or checking the wiring and electronics in the blower. Electrical problems might be repaired by tightening connections or replacing parts. Being without an air conditioner is very inconvenient during the hot days of summer, and it can make sleeping nearly impossible.

You might find an RV repair service that can come to your campsite to make repairs to your air conditioner and get you cooled off as soon as possible and without having to break up camp and take your RV to the shop.
